Christian Formation Ministries

Children's Sunday School

The Sunday School program offers classes for children starting at age three, and is staffed by volunteer teachers under the supervision of our director of Christian Education. The program runs throughout the school year and includes seasonal offerings such as the Christmas pageant. The Primary elementary children experience Cokesbury's "Seasons of the Spirit" curriculum and Secondary elementary school age children use Sparkhouse's "re:form Foundation" curriculum.

Adult Forum and Bible Study

Most Sunday mornings during the school year an educational forum is held in Millen Hall for adults at 9:15 am. Topics for discussion vary from books of the Bible to giants of church history to current events and outreach ministries. Presenters include clergy, seminarians, and gifted lay teachers. Bible study is held on Tuesday evenings at 7:30 pm in the Narthex and on Thursday afternoons at 2:00 pm in the lower level conference room from September to May.

Children's Chapel

This mini-service for children is held Sundays during the 10:00 service. The children leave the sanctuary after the Gospel reading and gather in the Parish Hall for a lesson and prayers. They rejoin their parents in time for the Exchange of the Peace. If your child attends Children's Chapel, please sign up to lead or help at least once before Christmas and once after.

St. Francis Creche

Our weekday preschool program at St. Francis, for children two and a half to five years old, promotes Christian growth through participation in regular chapel services conducted by our Rector and Assistant Rector, with Bible stories, Christian music, and prayer. The Creche provides developmentally appropriate educational experiences to facilitate physical, social, emotional, and cognitive growth. A theme-based integrated curriculum using literature, art, and music fosters communication, creativity, and problem-solving skills. Parishioners are encouraged to volunteer in class, with special events, or by serving on the board of directors.

During regular Sunday services and other events requiring childcare, a paid attendant and parent volunteers provide care for young children and babies in a cheerful nursery setting. Parents of children using the nursery are needed to volunteer at least four Sundays during the year.

Fellowship Groups

Newcomers Ministry

This group welcomes newcomers to the St. Francis family and provides information on parish life and activities. Occasional newcomer social hours are held after the 9:00 service. Long-time Franciscans are invited to serve as mentors to new families.

Tables for Ten

Adult Franciscans gather in groups of ten to meet and get to know each other over meals in their homes. Signups occur in the fall, and get-togethers take place over the next nine months. New tables may be added during the year to accommodate newcomers. Singles and couples are welcome!

St. Francis @ Starbucks  -- Book Club Group

St. Francis @ Starbucks brings Franciscans together at the Great Falls Village Starbucks to discuss selected books in an informal setting. See the Events page under Ongoing Activities for up-to-date information.

Men's Group

The St. Francis Men's Group invites all men of the parish to join them at 7:30 am on Wednesday mornings in Millen Hall to share breakfast, discuss readings, to grow in an understanding of God. Join other Christian men in fellowship. See the Men's Group webpage for more information.

Shrine Mont Retreat

This early June retreat to the diocesan camp of Shrine Mont , in western Virginia , is a time for the entire parish to enjoy two days of fun and fellowship. Our sister parish, St. John 's McLean, joins us at Shrine Mont , and there is friendly competition between the two parishes in a variety of sports. One of the highlights of the weekend is the Saturday night talent show, where talent is optional.

Parish Life Ministries

Gardening and LandscapingLandscaping

St. Francis has six acres of beautiful grounds. We enjoy our setting for outdoor services and events, outdoor play and learning, meditation, and just enjoying nature. We welcome assistance with maintaing our gardens and landscape.

Kitchen Guild

This committee is responsible for keeping the kitchen stocked with disposable goods, such as coffee, tea, and condiments (provisions for parish coffee hours and functions). Members are also knowledgeable about the parish tabletop settings, which include china, flatware, stemware, a punch bowl and ladle, and miscellaneous serving items. These settings are available to renters of the Parish Hall for private events.

Office Volunteers

At certain times during the year our office staff needs extra help. Office volunteers spend a morning in the parish office as needed, answering the phone and door, copying bulletins, and generally assisting the parish administrator.

Ministries & Groups

A Place to share your talents and share God's love.

Offering your time and talent at St. Francis not only provides you with the satisfaction of serving your church, it is a wonderful way to experience fellowship and a deeper sense of belonging to our Christian community.

We are blessed to have the enthusiastic participation of many parishioners in the life of our church, and offer a wide variety of opportunities for ministry in our groups and committees. Some of these activities involve only a few hours a month or less. Volunteer ministry opportunities include:

If you have questions about how to get started, please contact a member of our clergy or vestry. We host an annual Ministries Fair in the fall, where you can learn more about all of our activities and how to get involved!

Pastoral Care Ministries

Prayer Circle

St. Francis has a dedicated prayer group. This group of prayer partners prays for the weekly petitions we have listed in the Sunday bulletin and sometimes beyond that list. Our prayer circle is strictly confidential. A prayer request is never discussed outside the circle. If you'd like to join this group, please contact one of our clergy. Everyone is welcome to participate. Both intercessions and thanksgivings are welcome. Also, if you have a request that you'd prefer not be listed in the Sunday bulletin but you'd like the prayer circle to include in their prayers, please contact the church office.

Stephen Ministry

Stephen Ministers are parishioners with a special gift for listening and companionship, who offer confidential one-on-one ministry to individuals going through a hard time. Extensive training is provided.

Helping Hands

This group reaches out to parishioners in time of need by providing meals, transportation, and other help as needed. A database of parishioner skills is maintained.
