Adult Christian Formation

Adult Forum

An Adult Forum or other program is held each Sunday morning at 9:15 - 9:50 am from September through May. The program at St. Francis seeks to provide opportunities for parishioners to learn in community about Scripture, the church's traditions, and our local ministries, including outreach, pastoral care, stewardship, and fellowship.

Bible Study

Did you know that Isaiah is a kind of Bible in miniature? Of all the books in the Old Testament this one says more, and most clearly, about Jesus Christ.
A daytime Bible Study group meets Thursdays from September to June  We come together to learn the Bible by doing a lesson at home and then sharing what we learned each week. An evening Bible Study group meetings every other Tuesday. See the Events page under Ongoing Activities for updates. All are welcome.

Contemplative Prayer

St. Francis will offer an introduction to three different methods of Christian meditation The group meets weekly on Mondays from 7:30 - 8:45 pm.  Learn more here.

Men's Group

The St. Francis Men's Group meets weekly to share breakfast, discuss readings, and grow in an understanding of God. Join other Christian men in fellowship on Wednesday mornings at 7:30 am.

In May 2015 St. Francis dedicated a labyrinth built on church grounds. This is available to all for contemplation and meditation.

Children's Christian Formation

St. Francis Nursery

The nursery at St. Francis Episcopal Church welcomes babies and children up to five years of age. Supervised care is available each Sunday morning from 9:00 to 11:15 am. Parents may bring their children in during all or part of the church service, and younger children may remain in the nursery while Sunday School is in session. (Sunday School classes are open to children in 1st through 8th grades.) The nursery suite is located on the main level of the church.

Our nursery staff and volunteers are trained in the Prevention of Child Abuse and Child Sexual Misconduct, a detailed program provided by the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia. In addition to our regular staff, we welcome and encourage parent volunteers to assist in the nursery. Please contact our parish administrator and director of Christian Education, Lynn Fallon, to learn more about this training program, which is available both in-person and online. For more information on the diocesan training, visit the diocese information page here

Sunday School

Sunday School at St. Francis is offered for children 1st 2nd Making Eggs 2in grades 1st through 8th, from September through May. Our Sunday School is staffed by a minimum of two volunteer teachers per class, under the supervision of Lynn Fallon, our director of Christian Education.  Registration Form found here.

Children's Chapel

As part of our 10:00 Sunday morning service from September through May, we offer Children's Chapel in Millen Hall. Children begin the service with their parents in the sanctuary. After the Gospel reading, children are invited to follow the Cross and gather in Millen Hall for a brief chapel service featuring a special story, music, and prayers. When we "Pass the Peace" (and before the Holy Communion), children return to their families in the sanctuary.

Your child may not feel comfortable leaving you for this brief service, and it is fine for any child to remain in the sanctuary during this time. You may also prefer to join your child in Children's Chapel.

Almighty God, you have blessed us with the joy and care of children.
Give us calm strength and patient wisdom as we bring them up,
that we may teach them to love whatever is just and true and good,
following the example of our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

St. Francis Youth Pilgrimages

"We always have a tendency to see those things that do not exist
and to be blind to the great lessons that are right there before our eyes."
~ Paulo Coelho, "The Pilgrimage"

Paulo Coelho's quote from "The Pilgrimage" is a reminder that sometimes we need to take a journey beyond what is safe and familiar in in order to see the world differently. Sometimes, unfamiliar glimpses of the beauty of this world are what bring a sense of awe and wonder. Sometimes, seeing how faith dwells in the lives of others invites a reexamination of God and self. A pilgrimage is to experience the geography, culture and history of a different place and people in such a way that we are invited into meaningful spiritual reflection.

Stay tuned for details on the next pilgrimage.
